I grew up ten minutes from the Kameoka pier, and the question I get asked is never which boat to take. There is one boat. The question is how you reach the pier at the top of the gorge and how you get home from the landing at the bottom, 16 km away in Arashiyama. The flagship day is the package that most reliably contains the boat, and at 4.5–5 hours it is also the shortest of the Kyoto departures. The onsen stop at the end is the part people remember. It is the tour I point my own visitors at.
The value day gets the train, the boat and the Arashiyama temples onto one booking, and it runs 7.5–10 hours to do it. It is a recent listing with almost no history behind it, so book it on its shape rather than on how it looks today.
The boat-and-train tour is a coach day with the Sagano Romantic Train and the boat attached, and it is the one riders push back on hardest — and enough of them have ridden it for that to be worth knowing. The small-group version runs 10 hours with a smaller group on the boat-and-train pairing. Another recent listing with almost no history. Same caution as the value day.
From Osaka, the 10-hour door-to-door tour is the priciest of the six. You are paying for the logistics, not for a better boat — the boat is the same one everybody else rides.
The rafting half-day from Kameoka is not the traditional boat ride. It is a raft down the same gorge, and it is by a distance the most-booked product on this river. Wet, active, and the cheapest way onto the water. Different day, same water.

Ride on a weekday between 10 March and 13 December if your dates allow. Departures run hourly from 09:00 to 15:00, so a missed connection costs you an hour, not a day. On weekends and holidays the boats leave when they fill up instead, which is fine on the pier and awkward if you are trying to hold a tour schedule together.
Before you book
Two things are worth reading first. One is what all of this costs, in yen at the pier and what the packages add on top, because the gap is smaller than people expect once the trains are counted. Which Hozugawa tour should I book?
For most people, the flagship Arashiyama day with the train, boat and onsen. It is the shortest of the Kyoto departures and the only one here with a long history behind it. If money is tight, the value day does the same three things for less over a longer schedule. If you are based in Osaka, start with the door-to-door day instead.
Can I just buy a boat ticket instead of a tour?
Yes. Same-day tickets are sold at the pier counter, first come first served, and groups of nine or fewer can book online. What you do not get is the transfer at either end, which is the part that eats the day. Tickets and booking ahead covers the difference in full.
Is the rafting trip the same as the Hozugawa river boat ride?
