Private Hozugawa tours and charter boats

Let me be straight about what exists, because this is a page where sites tend to imply more than they can deliver. The boats on the Hozugawa are shared. You sit on bench seating with other passengers, three to five boatmen work the hull with oars and bamboo poles, and around 300,000 people a year ride the same way. There is no quiet upgrade at the counter.

Chartering the whole boat

A private charter runs ¥144,000 to ¥162,000 depending on the season. That is the boat, not a per-person fare, and it is the only genuine way to ride without strangers beside you. For a couple it is absurd. For a family group, a company outing or a wedding party it starts to make arithmetic sense, especially measured against ¥6,000 a head for walk-up adult tickets. Groups of nine or fewer can book online; at ten and above the operator asks you to phone ahead, and a charter conversation belongs on the phone anyway. The nearest thing to a private guided day

Among the packages, the small-group boat and train day is the one that reads closest to private. It runs 10 hours with a smaller group and includes the boat ticket. It is also a recent listing with very little history behind it, which is not something I would build a plan around. Who each option is actually for

Charter the boat if your group is large enough that the per-head number stops hurting, or if the occasion is the point. Take the small-group day if you want fewer people around you for the rest of the itinerary and you accept that it is too new to judge. Buy a walk-up ticket and share a bench if you mainly want the 100 minutes on the water, which is what I would do on an ordinary weekday. One practical note for any group booking. Peak periods sell out — Golden Week and the November foliage season in particular — and a group of ten or more cannot fix that on the morning by turning up early. Sort the booking weeks ahead. Tickets and booking covers the rules in full.
