Haruka YoshidaKameoka-based river guide and travel writer — Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan

I am Haruka Yoshida, a kameoka-based river guide and travel writer. I grew up ten minutes from the Hozugawa boarding pier in Kameoka, worked four seasons on the riverbank, and have ridden the 16 km run down to Arashiyama in every month it operates. This site is my independent guide to that ride and to the tours built around it. I am not the boat operator and this is not the official site.

Why I built this

The ticket at the pier is ¥6,000 and buying it is the easy part. The hard part is the day around it. Kameoka is one train line and about half an hour out of central Kyoto, the boat lands you 16 km away in Arashiyama, and people who have not planned the return burn an afternoon working it out on a platform. I watched that happen for four seasons. Most of what I write here exists to stop it happening to you.

The rest is the ride itself: about 100 minutes, three to five boatmen working oars and bamboo poles, deep green pools and a few short rapids. Around 300,000 people do it every year. It is not whitewater and it is not a theme park. Some people finish it and wish they had spent the time on temples, which is why I wrote is it worth it as a real question rather than a sales pitch.

How I work

I compare the tours that include the boat ride and I say which one solves which problem. Where a listing is too new to have a track record, I say so. Where a product is not the traditional boat ride at all, I say that too. I do not quote customer reviews I cannot verify, and I do not invent numbers — prices, timetables and yen figures on this site come from the operator and from GetYourGuide, and nowhere else. Start with the complete guide or with the tour reviews.

How the site is funded

When you book through a link here, GetYourGuide pays me a small commission. You pay the same price you would pay going to them directly. It does not change what I recommend, and the affiliate disclosure spells out the whole arrangement.
